We discovered and actually stumbled into Otto Bauer on a windy Friday in October, when after meeting up for breakfast, we decided that it was actually time for lunch and as so often we just set out to walk into a new place we hadn’t been to before.
The restaurant is nestled into a small street, fittingly called “Otto Bauer Gasse”, off busy Mariahilferstrasse in Vienna’s 6th district. Entering you are instantly welcomed by the leisurely cool decor, think going to a friend’s place for lunch. And if, while sipping your coffee, you feel you ought to own the chair you are sitting on, you can! Because all the art and furniture in the restaurant can be purchased, or so we have heard.
As with many places, Otto Bauer offers changing daily lunch options as well as the a la carte menu. While not a vegetarian or vegan restaurant, they do have a mouth-watering selection for both diets. We ordered the vegetarian lunch option of the day which was tagliatelle with roasted veg and herb sauce and one cooked to order vegan mushroom with cashew cream on a bulgur risotto. The quality of both dishes was evident in the flavours, it was delicious.
On Saturday’s Otto Bauer also offers breakfast between 9:00 and 15:00. We have never been but it is on our list. Outright we’re pretty sure that booking a table would be advisable.
Couple the great food with the friendly and attentive service, including an incredibly elegant lady, lovingly called “Tante Lilli”, and we think you have found yourself a wonderful, easy-going spot to enjoy good quality food at.
