Hot Cocoa & Banana Smoothie (vegan)

Hot Banana & Cocoa Smoothie -- www.thevitalsisters.com
In summer we all like to refresh ourselfs with ice-tea, iced-lattés, iced-chocolate frappés or ice cold smoothies but once the seasons change and temperatures are coming closer and closer to the freezing point we prefer the hot version of those drinks. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate – nothing special or worth talking about. But what about smoothies? Did you ever have a hot smoothie? Or did you ever even think about that? Well I certainly didn’t. Never ever would I have been considering to make myself a hot breakfast smoothie! But then a couple of weeks ago when the weather outside was what can only be described as horrible, I was longing for a warming, sweet drink… After skimming through my fridge and larder contents, an idea flashed across my mind. I have to admit, I’ve actually felt rather excited about that idea. A hot smoothie! Weird. So of course, I had to give it a try immediately. I decided to play it save and make a simple smoothie with cocoa powder and bananas. And as I was rather pleased with the outcome I thought I could share the recipe with you.

I know that there are probably thousands of hot smoothie recipes on the internet already, but to me,  this was something completely new. I hope you enjoy the drink as much as I do. And of course, this smoothie can also be enjoyed cold 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1/4 cup cashews
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp raw cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp raw cocoa nibs
  • vanilla bean
  • salt
  • agave syrup

How it’s done

Soak the cashews for about 4 hours . You don’t necessarily need to do that. However,  many of people claim that by soaking nuts they are easier to digest and our body is able to absorb more of their minerals. Plus the added bonus, they are far easier to blend.

If you opted for soaking your nuts, discard the soaking water, rinse with cold water and drain them.

Put the cashews, water and a pinch of salt in your high speed blender and blend on high until the mix is smooth and creamy. Now you can add in the banana, the cocoa powder, cocoa nibs and vanilla (if using). Blend it some more, until you get a luxuriously creamy texutre.

Transfer your mix into a small pan, put it on the stove and gently heat. You can also add agave syrup (or sweetener of choice) now. Let the mix boil up, turn off the stove, transfer it into a mug or glas and enjoy! 🙂
